Shipping Tips for Warranty Repairs and Service.Occasionally it is necessary to return an airgun or other item to an authorized facility for repair. This need not be a harrowing experience. All you have to do is take a deep breath and use a little common sense. DO NOT continue to shoot any airgun (or any gun) with a defective safety. ALWAYS read and understand the instructions before attempting to use a new airgun or attempting to install a new accessory. One airgun company estimated that nearly 90% of airgun failures and damage could have been avoided if the owner had read and followed the instructions. Save the instruction book and other papers--they contain important information and may be needed at a later date. Retaining the original box may also be useful. BEFORE RETURNING FOR REPAIR make sure there actually is a need. A sudden loss of accuracy can be caused by loose screws rather rather than a defective gun or scope. First make sure all screws on the gun and scope mounts are snug and try it again. Next remove the scope and test the gun with the iron sights or another scope to see which is at fault. DO NOT attempt to make repairs yourself unless you are thoroughly familiar with airgun repair. Repairs (or attempts) made at other than a factory authorized facility will void the manufacturer's warranty. In many cases, the mainspring in spring-piston airguns is under considerable pressure even when the gun is uncocked. Releasing the spring without proper training and tools can cause cause serious injury.
MAKE SURE that you have the correct address. Companies have been known to move. It is best to call or write for specific instructions before returning the item. They may even be able to tell you how to correct the problem yourself. PREPARE A BRIEF NOTE listing the make, model and serial number and explaining the nature of the problem. Include your name, address and a daytime phone number in the note. I also like to attach a string tag with my name, etc. to the trigger guard. Some companies require that you pay return postage (from them to you) even for warranty repairs; don't argue, just do it. REMOVE ANY ACCESSORIES. In the case of an airgun, remove the scope and mount, trigger shoe, sling and barrel band, muzzlebrake and so forth. If the defect is in a major component the factory may send a different gun. In other cases, accessories may have to be removed to reach the repair area and, once separated from the gun, may become lost. PACKAGE IT SECURELY. You are protecting something you own and shipping damage can only make things worse. This is where the original box may be handy. Use a sturdy outer box and lots of padding. Plainly address the package to the proper repair facility--FSI is NOT a repair station. Include your name and address on the outside of the package. Ship it via a carrier that you trust and insure the package for its full value. Keep the shipping receipt. Certain carriers issue a tracking number that can be handy in locating the package or proving the delivery date. BE PATIENT. Two weeks would be a very fast turn-around. Three to five weeks is more normal. Some companies will send you a notice that they have received the item and possibly a repair order number. Save this notice as it may be helpful later.
